Well, using a metal detector is a good idea, but you need to be careful. I have found rock/volcanic material with heavy concentrates of iron in Arizona that are very dark and heavy, and resemble what I have seen on TV shown to be meteorites.
Obviously, you need some ways to test any subject material you are interested in as a possible meteorite.
Using appearance, magnetic test, streak test, window test, nickel test, and density and specific gravity, you will have an extremely good chance of verifying your find is a meteorite. Links to more testing are provided.
