Have a Mind to Investigate a Gem Mine, Here's Your Chance - Sluice for Emeralds -Emerald Hollow Mine

I found this article to be interesting - although it is not about gold prospecting. It is about gem prospecting at the Emerald Hollow Mine. Hunting for gems involves similar work as prospecting for gold. The gems tend to be heavier in weight and so you screen repeatedly with finer screen running water over the screens while you do it. Washing away the dirt and silt reveals the pretty gems, while smaller pieces will sift through finer screen. I have gone to the Oceanview Mine in California and spent the day recovering gems - and finding a few that were jewelry quality: smokey quartz and tourmaline.
The article gives prices for various activity (it is an affordable family activity) and also introduces the reader to sluicing, creeking, and digging, along with a lot of other good information. There are emeralds at Emerald Hollow Mine
